| Blown Engine |
1. A super-charged engine
2. Engine is totally destroyed |
| Boost |
Increased intake manifold pressure caused by supercharging
or turbo |
| Bottom End |
1. The lower portion of an engine which includes the
crankshaft, main bearing webs and connecting rods.
2. Low-speed power, as in "it has a strong bottom end" |
| Break Out |
To have a faster ET than the index - calls for
disqualifcation |
| Burn Down |
Any stall tactic used against a competitor causing their
engine to overheat |
| Burnout |
Spinning the rear tires in water to heat and clean them
prior to a run for better traction |
| Bye Run |
To race unopposed during the competition |
| Chute |
1. Short for parachute, which is used as a high-speed
brake to slow a car down at the end of the run
2. The initial acceleration point of a drag strip |
| Clutch Can |
A protective steel housing that fits over the rear portion
of a race engine to keep clutch/flywheel failures from injuring the driver
or bystanders |
| Cut a Light |
To record an excellent reaction time at the start of a drag
race |
| Deep Stage |
A driver is in deep stage when after staging he/she rolls a
few inches farther causing the pre-stage light to go out. This
gives the driver a bit of an advantage, but is dangerously close to a Red
Light. |
| Dial-In |
After running a couple of time trials, the dial-in is the ET
the driver thinks the car will run |
| Elapsed Time (ET) |
This is the time it takes for the car to go down the track |
| Groove |
The centre of each lane which has the most rubber and the
best traction |
| Header |
A specially designed exhaust manifold usually formed from
thin wall tubing which allows for a minimum restriction in exhaust. |
| Hook Up |
To achieve maximum traction |
| Late |
Sleeping at the "tree" - poor reaction time |
| Launch |
1. The start of a drag race
2. The way the vehicle leaves the line |
| Magneto (Mag) |
A self-contained ignition system which creates it's own
current |
| Puke Tank |
A small can or reservoir used to catch an overflow of oil or
water |
| Roll Cage |
A much more extensive roll bar welded into the vehicle's
frame for added support and safety |
| Slicks |
Wide, smooth racing tires that have no tread |
