WHAT'S NEW
January 21, 2012 Exciting news.... IBAA has been invited to run in Medicine Hat at the Canadian Open July 28 & 29. We look forward to racing again at their track. We have been in contact with the tracks and have put together a tentative schedule for the upcoming season.
Seasons Greetings The
entire IBAA group would like to wish everyone a safe and happy holiday season
and best wishes for 2012.
End of Season 2011 Well
race fans, what can I say? LIFE
HAPPENS. I could sit here for a
while and make excuses why this site has been left alone for so long, but for
those of you in this sport know that once the race is over you tend to take some
breathing time before jumping back in. My
time was just a little longer than some. Anyway,
I’m now jumping back in with the review of the rest of the season. Grand
Prairie was a great weekend. The weather was perfect and the cars ran
great. This event saw Cody Anstead as the overall winner, taking our both
Darrell and Sherrie in their respective rounds. The
next race was in Saskatoon, what a great time.
14 Feature Cars did their thing for the fans and the attendance was
phenomenal. Record crowd for this
event so I am sure they will continue to provide this type of show next year.
As these events are always match races and we don’t officially keep
track of the winners and losers, I’m pretty sure Sherrie kicked everyone’s
butt at her home track. We could say it was home team advantage, I just think she’s
a damn good driver. Last
official IBAA event of the year was in Drayton Valley.
We ran up against the Rocky Mountain Nostalgia Funny Car Association and
with this being a 7.50 index due to insurance reasons, everyone was ready for a
low maintenance weekend. Everyone
ran great, hit the index with no issues and put on a great long & loud smoky
burnout show for the fans. Can’t
thank all the volunteers and organizers enough that put this event on. It
is run well and seems to get more and more people out every year.
Keep it up guys & gals. We
had our year end BBQ to celebrate another super year of racing and some even had
a great view of the Drayton Valley sunrise. The
last kick at the cat that wasn’t an IBAA race, but was attended by Cody
Anstead, driver of the Twisted Motosports ’69
Camaro and Darrell “The Burnout King” Webb in his ’70 Nova. Together
they made the long trek to Bakersfield California for the “20th
Annual California Hot Rod Reunion” at Famosa Raceway.
The weather was fantastic, the cars were spectacular and the fans came
out in droves. The
track staff were awesome and treated us great. The track itself was in great condition and we had our work
was cut out for us. Our first round
was not what we expected, both Darrell and Cody didn’t hit even close to the
number we were hoping for and given the fact that both cars had blower issues
didn’t help much either. Second
round was tense. The bump was a
7.074 for a sixteen car field. So…
by the time we made our pass the bump was now at a 7.052 and although both teams
did the best they could, as usual mechanical issues reared their ugly heads and
neither team qualified. Cody’s
car seemed to be a good lick, but nosed over at the top end almost as if it just
ran out of steam. Darrell ran a
7.08 losing the blower belt at the 1000 foot mark. Just not our turn I guess.
We plan on attending next year’s event and will definitely kick some
butt. Met some great people there
and hope to see them again next year.
Photo album updated......
August 20, 2011 This weekend you will find the IBAA cars in Grande Prairie. Sherrie Bodnarchuk, Darrell Webb and Cody Anstead are warming up the cars in the pits getting ready for first round at 1:00. Looks like we are going to have a great weekend of weather for racing. Great racing, great weekend. We put on a a great show. The track was a bit slippery, but we managed to get down with some pretty good numbers. As usually we had long smoky burnouts and the crowd love it. Congratulations to Twisted Motorsports getting down the track with 3 full passes and times getting back in the mid 7's. Next race finds us in Saskatoon for this coming weekend - Saturday night August 27.
Checkout the schedule update. All races confirmed.....
July 9, 2011 Ft. St. John, BC.... cancelled Well, once again Mother Nature is totally against us. Another rainout. Three of the IBAA team as sitting at the Paradise RV shop in Grande Prairie with nothing to do, but... yup...... PARTY!!!!! We aren't getting a lot of racing in this year, but we are having a great time.
After the RMN, The Twisted Motorsports team, with the help of Darrell Webb of Webb Family Motorsports, thrashed all week putting together Darrell's spare motor for them to use because of their issue with the camshaft. They had everything put together and fired the car Wednesday morning and all is good. They packed everything up and headed to Grande Prairie. They fired the car again in Grande Prairie and again... broken lifter and camshaft. All is back together again and it is ready to fire. Everything is good, the motor lives.... however, now issues with the tranny. This par for the course for a new team, bugs to work out, but they have a lot of support from the other teams and we will all work together to get them back on the track. Next race...... August 10th - Hot August Night in Edmonton AB
June 26, 2011 Rocky Mountain Nationals continued..... After 3 qualifying passes, Darrell ended up at #5 at 7.113 and Sherrie was #7 with a 7.176 First round saw Darrell meet Eddy Plaizier of the RMNFC. Unfortunately the starter decided it didn't want to work today so Darrell was unable to make the pass leaving the win to Eddy. Sherrie was up against Dave Brant. Sherrie took the win with 7.190 at 192.14 MPH to Dave's 7.313 at 189.02 MPH Second round Sherrie was up against Ron Sekura of the RMNFC.... Sherrie spun on the line and ran a 7.178 at 192.41 MPH however not quick enough to beat Ron to the finish line with his 7.131 at 187.63. That's it for the IBAA cars for this years Rocky Mountain Nationals. Everyone had a great time. Lots of food and drinks. Thanks so much to Menno of Western Camp Services for all the awesome catered food this weekend.
June 25, 2011 Rocky Mountain Nationals from Edmonton, AB.
Since we weren't running the Twisted Motorsports team took advantage and used the time for a warm up and test the car since in Calgary they had the issue with the oil filter and motor plate. Everything was put back together and the car fired. It sounded good until they blipped it and then there was a major issue. Cody shut the car down right away, but they unfortunately learned they had snapped the cam shaft in half. After hours and hours taking things apart they found the damage was too much to be repaired to be able to make this race. Cody was runner up last year at this race. Today the weather is not great, but it dry and we were able to make a qualifying pass around 2:00. Darrell had a good first pass running 7.113 at 193.38 MPH. This puts Darrell as #4 qualifier. Sherrie did a great burnout. There was an issue with the rev limiter and she ran a 7.570 at 175.32 MPH. She sits in #8 spot. #2 qualifying is at 6:00 for the Pro Show.... let the rain stay away. June 19, 2011 Happy Father's Day from Calgary AB. Saturdays race was called on due to rain so needless to say a good time partying was had by all. The weather has been much better today - the sun is shining and with only a couple of quick sun showers the race is going on as scheduled. We just made our first pass of the year. Not the best run of the careers of our awesome drivers, but the tree was not set to a Pro Tree so it through them off a bit. The track is rough in a couple of spots so they were not stellar passes, but the burnouts were good and the cars made it down the track with no issues. Cody Anstead and Darrell Webb were the first pair out followed by Sherrie Bodnarchuk. Our next pass will be around 3:30 this afternoon. 3:30 pass ran around 4:30 - first pair up was Darrell and Sherrie. They both did a nice long smokey burnout that we are known for. They backed up and.... you guessed it.... rain. Shut them down and pushed them back. By the look of the sky it wasn't going to stop so the track staff decided it best to just run the jet cars for a line show and we were done. Luckily the rain stopped and we were able to run the 3 funny cars that were available for this race. Cody ran a single - unfortunately for the Twisted Motorsports team Cody had oil on the tires and took a hard right almost lifting onto 2 tires. Cody's quick reaction straightened out the car and noticed no oil pressure so he shut down the car. Turns out the top broke off of the oil filter and as Cody corrected the car it twisted and broke motor mount. It is an easy fix and Twisted Motorsports will be back and ready for the Rocky Mountain Nationals next weekend in Edmonton. Darrell and Sherrie ran next - this time they were ready for the track conditions and both ran good ET's at fairly high MPH - since there was oil in the right lane from Cody, we finished by running singles in the left lane. Both cars are in good shape and are ready for the Rocky Mountain Nationals. Once back in the pits we had to get the cars packed up quick because the skies opened up and it poured rain for 30 minutes or so... everything was wet a muddy to finish packing. That's racing! We need to get Mother Nature back as a drag racing fan so she will spread sunshine on the weekends for us to run. Thanks to the Calgary track staff and volunteers. The weekend turned out to be a good race.
2011 Season has arrived... Our IBAA members are busy getting last minute work done on the cars so we can get out to the track for testing. Returning members are Darrell Webb, Cody Anstead, Sherrie Bodnarchuk and Arvid Fonstad. Also Dave Brant and Cody McCormick will be joining our group, however as new drivers they will need to get their license and a some seat time. It is late this year, but we are still negotiating with tracks for race dates. Check out the schedule page for our tentative schedule.
What is next for the IBAA.... The season may be officially over for our regular races, but three of our members, Darrell Webb, Cody Anstead and Arvid Fonstad, will be making the trek to Famosa Speedway in Bakersfield CA for October 15, 16 & 17. Drivers and crew members are excited to take the cars to this track for the first time. We've been there to watch many times, but this will be the first time to participate in the California NHRA Hot Rod Reunion. Wish us luck! Thanks for all your support over the season. Next year is looking to be bigger and better than this one. New members and more cars are in the forecast. Stay tuned for news of events. September 22, 2010 Our little boys are all growed up. Jared Anstead of Paradise RV and Jeremy Jelinski of Webb Family Motorsports, spent the weekend getting their licenses to drive the ``big cars``. Jared just graduated from the jr. dragster program once he turned 16 and now has his license to go 7 seconds or slower. Jeremy, being part of Webb Family for the past 9 years, has received his license to go 9 seconds or slower. Both guys did extremely well and we are all very proud of them. Jeremy is now chomping at the bit to get into the funny car. Too bad Jeremy, you’ll have to wait until spring now!.
September
14, 2010 This small, but exceptional track was a surprise to everyone that attended. Darrell Webb, Cody Anstead and Sherrie Bodnarchuk were there to put on a show for the locals. Arvid Fonstad came out with his daughter’s jr. dragster and would have had his funny car as well, but due to major engine and transmission damage in Saskatoon, that wasn’t possible. This type of venue is what we truly love to do. The fans and track organizers are so appreciative and aren’t shy about saying so. They also hang out with us after the event is over so we get to know them better. This “airport” has the potential to being a great alternative for drag racing against the major facilities in Alberta. Although it is not a large area the track surface itself is awesome. Thanks for the invite we had a blast. Also, a big congrats to the Vegreville Drag Racing Association for making this event happen. September
4 & 5, 2010 It is amazing how times flies. This was Drayton Valley’s 7th event and we have attended every one of them. The amount of things they have learned about drag racing over the years definitely shows. The track personnel are great to work with and always ensure we are happy with the program. We in turn ensure they are getting their monies worth with our show. Cody Anstead and Darrell Webb were invited to race along with the RMNFCA to put on DV’s annual event “Thunder in the Valley”. Hardy people live in Drayton. It was cold with the threat of rain, yet everyone was there in there winter woolies to watch the cars do their thing. It was a great success with both Darrell and Cody running the numbers on a 7:50 index. Once again, the King of the burnouts and the young natural born driver would face off to see who was the best over the weekend. Given the index and although Cody crossed the line first, a breakout doesn’t make a win. The results are inconclusive, so we called it a tie. Besides, it’s the show that matters right guys??? Next, we are off to Vegreville, AB. Stay tuned for updates. August
21, 2010 SIR - Saskatoon, SK Saskatoon International Raceway.... What can we say about this track???? We love racing at SIR - Skippy and his track people are the best to work with. It has become tradition for the IBAA to be at this race. The weather was perfect.... with threats of rain it held off for the entire race to get off without a hitch... not even 1 oil down. We had Arvid, Cody, Darrell and Sherrie at this race along with Dwayne in his altered who is thinking of putting a body on his chassis to run with the IBAA next year. First pass Darrell was not lined up quite right and got out of the groove around the 100ft mark, he fought the car but it had a mind of it's own and ended up doing a lane change into Cody's lane. Cody at the same time lifted the front tires at the transition from the concrete so he had slowed down..... Darrell followed Cody down the right lane to the end of the track. A sight not normally seen at the drag races.... The rest of the passes where not quite as eventful as the first. This being Sherrie's home track, Dave knows where to line her up and she had an awesome run every time. Cody made it down the track with a 7.64 on his third pass without an issue. With all the work they have been doing on the car this season, Cody generously offered to let Kato make the last pass. Arvid had a great night, or so we thought. Turns out the last pass may have done a bit of damage as they found they were unable to back the motor down.... could be some valve issues. We'll see what the problem is. We hope to see Dwayne as a member next season. September 4 & 5 sees Darrell, Cody and Arvid in Drayton Valley for Thunder in the Valley.... see ya there!
August 11, 2010 – Hot August Night Edmonton, AB The is one of the best events of the year for our group. The crowd is huge and the fans are pumped to see some of the best cars running in the area. Arvid Fonstad, Sherrie Bodnarchuk, Darrell Webb and Cody Anstead were eager to get out there and put on a show for the fans. Running this event as a match race on a 7.20 index is the most fun anyone can have. Fun competition against friends, it can’t get any better than that. First round saw Darrell and Cody. The master and the apprentice. Man that kid learns fast. As this was Cody’s first pass since a tear down for repair, it was moderate, a 7.64 to Darrell’s 7.42 still proved to be a great race to watch. Sherrie and Arvid were up next. With this being Arvids first pass against someone since receiving his license, he did an awesome job against Sherrie. Last pass had Sherrie and Darrell together and Arvid vs. Cody. Hope everyone had a as much fun as we did.
August 1 & 2, 2010 Gimli, MB The Gimli race track, once a runway for their airport, has been a drag strip longer than people can remember. Cody Anstead, Darrell Webb and Sherrie Bodnarchuk attended this event and received a warm welcome from last years attendees. Darrell and Cody matched up first, with Sherrie on a single. Cody, having engine trouble, made a full pass, but struggled to get full power out of it giving Darrell the win for that round. Second round, Darrell and Sherrie were once again up against each other, which proved to be a motivator for Darrell since the last encounter. Darrell ran a 7.41 to Sherrie’s 7.54. Cody ran a single on this pass. Third pass of the day, Darrell and Sherrie swapped lanes and did an awesome side by side burnout for the fans. Darrell beat her again with a 7.27 to her 7.32. Monday saw great skies and great racing. After a night of repair, Cody made a run for first round, but still to their extreme disappointment, the gremlin remained. They opted to shut down to avoid major damage. Darrell and Sherrie did the final round together and she came back with a vengeance and ran a perfect 7.20 to Darrell’s 7.27. Can’t wait for Hot August night in Edmonton to meet up again.
July 17, 2010 Yorkton, SK No one can say that just because you don’t have a huge facility to race at that you can’t have the enthusiasm needed to race. The folks in Yorkton have the airport available to them, which they have made into their own playground. Nice cars, very nice people and the fans are incredible. There were more people at this event than I have seen at general races in Vegas. Darrell and Sherrie were invited to put on a show and get the potential to going back in 2011. This match race saw Sherrie winning the first round on this 1/8 mile track and Darrell losing the second to Sherrie’s hole shot. Good thing Darrell doesn’t mind being beat by a girl. Awesome burnouts were done by both competitors and the fans loved it. We are looking forward to going back next year.
July 13, 2010 Ashcroft, BC.
- HOT, HOT, HOT! We don’t get those conditions around Alberta very often and those of you that live around the Kamloops and Ashcroft area must have thick skin. The wind was even hot. First we want to thank Brad and Heather Janishewski of AHRA for inviting both Darrell Webb and Cody Anstead to put on a show to promote the upcoming AHRA Heritage Reunion Tour in August. Not only were we happy to help him out, but they put on a great spread of food for the gang on Friday and Saturday night. Although the car count wasn’t what they had hoped for and the crowd was definitely smaller than we have seen in the past, those that were there, got a show to remember. Saturday we ran only one run due to heat and some delays. Darrell ran a 7.64 on a 7.50 index. The mph was way down @ 153, so Cody closed in on him at the finish line with a 7.94 @ 172 mph. Sunday we made two passes. Both runs Darrell ran just under the index the first being a 7.49 the second was a 7.43. Cody was having trouble as both runs in opposite lanes saw a ton of air under all four tires. Dean Murdoch of Speed Zone Magazine has an awesome photo of Cody with all 4 wheels off the ground. We found out later, even though his last pass was not a bad number, they hurt the motor. So… maintenance is required for them to get ready for Gimli, Manitoba on the August long weekend. Next race will see Darrell Webb take on Sherrie Bodnarchuk in Yorkton, Saskatchewan on July 17 & 18. June 28, 2010 This past weekend was the annual IHRA Rocky Mountain Nationals at Castrol Raceway. The members of the IBAA and a few additional Pro Nostalgia cars were in prime form for the event. Sherrie Bodnarchuk, Darrell Webb, and Cody Anstead were pumped to win this years IHRA Ironman Trophy. Due to a sudden downpour and other delays in the program, Fridays qualifying session was cancelled. We were fortunate to be able to get an extra run in on Saturday so we all weren’t trying to get a tune up for eliminations on only two runs. Qualifying Positions – 7.20 index1 Darrell Webb 7.220 2 Sherrie Bodnarchuk 7.298 3 Cody Anstead 7.416 Craig Anstead - owner 4 Cory Kincaid 7.503 5 Troy Sitko 7.531 Arvid Fonstad - owner 6 Rick Barnhart 7.762 7 Ted Queen 8.516 Sunday began with great weather and tons of fans in the stands. First round of eliminations ran at 11:00 and with the field being short one car, Darrell got the bye to the semi’s. Sherrie Bodnarchuk had major engine failure the night before and was unable to make it to eliminations. Her competitor, Ted Queen from Alaska got the bye, but unfortunately had engine trouble at the line after his burnout so he too was unable to continue. Cody Anstead was up against Rick Barnhart who had to make the decision not to run due to oil problems. A safe call to make in order to save not only parts, but money and possible track delays on the run itself. This gave Cody an automatic win and he would advance to the semi’s. Troy Sitko in Arvid Fonstad’s Mustang vs. Cory Kincaid both did awesome burnouts, but Troy was unable to get reverse and had to drive the car to the end of the track, meaning he didn’t get a time or the opportunity to carry on. Cory ran a 7.30 and was up against Darrell Webb in the semi’s. Second round had Darrell Webb again with a single ran a 7.30 and move on to the Finals when Cory Kincaid lost the driveshaft and was unable to stage his car. Cody Anstead got the bye due to Ted Queen’s first round engine trouble. Ted made a pass anyway to figure out some gremlins and made a discovery that will help him from here on out. Ted traveled a long way to get to the race and we were glad we were able to help with that. Cody ran a 7.28 and gave Darrell something to be concerned about. Final round was Darrell Webb up against first time Pro Nostalgia participant and first time funny car driver 18 year old Cody Anstead. Both were very excited to be there and both wanted to win. Darrell left Cody at the tree with a .101 reaction time to Cody’s .310. It’s a good thing too as Cody ran an excellent 7.24 to Darrell’s 7.30 at the finish line. Congratulations to both Webb Family Motorsports and the Paradise RV race team for a great performance. ******************************************************************************************************************************************************* Webb Family Motorsports - 2010 Rocky Mountain Nationals Pro Nostalgia Champion Paradise RV Racing - 2010 Rocky Mountain Nationals Pro Nostalgia Runner Up
*********************************************************************************************************************************************** Next race in Ashcroft BC at the Eagle Motorplex July 10 & 11 2010 June 7, 2010 We finally got a chance to get out to the track on the weekend to do some testing. Mother Nature gave us a break and held off the rain until the weekday for a change. Welcome to Craig Anstead and his crew to the IBAA. From the condition we were all in by the end of the weekend it is safe to say "Our drinking team has a racing problem". Check out the Members page for information on Craig and his team. You couldn't ask for a nicer bunch of guys. They spent Thursday & Friday nights thrashing in the shop to get the car ready to test Saturday. Fired it up at 10:30pm and it sounded great. Craig's oldest son Cody (18) will be driving the Camaro. He made 3 passes on the weekend and it looks like he's going to be a great funny car driver. His 2nd pass was full track at 8.18 and straight down the middle. At 18, Cody has already many years of racing experience driving Jr Dragsters, the 2 Seater dragster and the Top Eliminator Dragster. Darrell Webb was also out with the Nova. Darrell is up to his usual long smoky burnouts. Darrell and his crew will bring the usual performance to the fans once again this year. Please check our Schedule for some changes to the 2010 season. March 26, 2010 Website has been updated and ready for the 2010 season. Check out the new schedule and members page.
